Pothole Repairs Underway Across Binghamton

Mayor Kraham Encourages Residents to Report Potholes to Public Works

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.)—Mayor Jared M. Kraham on Tuesday visited Mozart Street on the West Side where crews were filling potholes as part of a springtime push to improve road conditions Citywide.

"With the hot asphalt plants opening, City crews are out across Binghamton repairing potholes following the winter season," said Mayor Kraham. "This push helps ensure our roads are safe for drivers and pedestrians while we prepare for more extensive road work with the start of the City's 2025 street improvement plan. Residents can request pothole repairs by calling the Department of Public Works."

With warmer temperatures, City crews have started repairing potholes with hot mix asphalt, a long-term fix that prevents potholes from resurfacing. The hot asphalt repair method, which requires warmer weather, involves removing existing asphalt from the pothole, filling it in and then sealing it with hot asphalt.

Prior to spring, pothole repair crews use cold patch asphalt for a more short-term fix. The cold patch does not provide as tight a seal, and potholes often resurface as a result.
