Mayor Kraham Announces Construction Underway for Downtown Streetscape Improvements Phase 2

Henry Street, Washington Street Near Forum Theater to Receive $5 Million in Upgrades

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.)—Mayor Jared M. Kraham on Tuesday announced the start of construction of Phase 2 of downtown arts district streetscape improvements focused on Henry Street, Water Street and Washington Street.

Mayor Kraham said: "Binghamton's arts community has long drawn thousands of visitors to our downtown, helping make the City a vibrant place to live, work and visit. These streetscape upgrades will enhance the heart of our arts district—home to The Forum and popular restaurants—making it more walkable, welcoming and revitalized to support the arts events and small businesses that make downtown special."

This week, crews started work on the comprehensive infrastructure improvement project, which includes new street lights, pedestrian and traffic signals, wider sidewalks for outdoor dining, safer pedestrian crossings, street trees and landscaping, underground utility upgrades and new pavement.

A raised crosswalk on Washington Street will support pedestrian safety for performing arts events at the Broome County Forum Theater.

Substantial construction will be completed this fall, with final paving and landscaping scheduled for completion in Spring 2026.

Businesses will remain open during construction, including Lost Dog Cafe, Garage Taco Bar, The Shop, Renaissance Tattoo, Old Barn Market and Crowbar Arcade.

Access to driveways and business entrances will be maintained during construction. Temporary street closures will affect Washington Street and Henry Street during the project. Washington Street will be closed to one lane of traffic for extended periods during construction.

Vacri Construction, of Binghamton, is completing the work at a cost of $5 million.

The project is supported by a $1 million grant from Empire State Development's Greater Binghamton Fund, supporting placemaking and downtown revitalization.
