Mayor Kraham Appoints New Fire Marshal
Arthur Griswold to Lead Department's Fire Prevention Office
(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.)—Mayor Jared M. Kraham on Thursday announced his appointment of Captain Arthur J. Griswold as the City's new Fire Marshal.
Mayor Kraham said: "Fire Marshal Griswold brings years of leadership experience and fire prevention expertise to this role. As Assistant and Acting Fire Marshal, he built a track record of working closely and effectively alongside the Office of Building Construction and Code Enforcement. His appointment builds on my administration's work to strengthen public safety and hold problem property owners accountable, while expanding partnerships with small businesses and cutting bureaucratic red tape."
A 19-year veteran of the Binghamton Fire Department, Griswold had served as the Assistant Fire Marshal since 2022. He took over as Acting Fire Marshal earlier this year following the retirement of Fire Marshal Timothy M. O'Neill.
Griswold served as a lieutenant from 2016 until his promotion to captain in 2022.
Prior to joining the Binghamton Fire Department, he was firefighter for the Village of Endicott from 2001 to 2006.
The Fire Marshal leads the department's Fire Prevention Office, which enforces New York State Fire Code and handles fire investigations.
The Fire Prevention Office conducted hundreds of building inspections last year, working to identify and eliminate hazardous conditions that pose a threat to life, the environment and property. The Office inspects commercial buildings, large multi-unit residential buildings and City-owned buildings.
All four members of the Fire Prevention Office are certified Code Enforcement officials, as well as certified Fire Investigators.
Additionally, the office leads efforts to educate the community on proper fire safety practices.
Griswold holds Associate of Applied Science degrees in Fire Protection Technology and Para-Medicine from SUNY Broome. He is a graduate of Chenango Valley High School.
