It can be confusing trying to understand your water/sewer bill. To help with clarification, we have listed the breakdown of how a bill is generated and what the charges are based upon.
The City of Binghamton bills in “Units of cubic feet” a cubic foot equals 7.48 gallons of water.
Since the City bills in one hundred cubic foot increments (or 748 gallons), one unit equals 100 cubic feet or 748 gallons.
If your bill is 21 units, it would break down as follows:
- The first ten units of water are charged at a fee (To view the current fee, please refer to the current of $35.00. To determine the remainder, take the 21 units minus 10 and that leaves 11 units.
- Take those 11 units and multiply them by $3.30—that would give you an amount of $38.30.
- Now add the two amounts $35.00 and $38.30 for a total water charge of $73.30.
- There is meter size-based Water Capitalization Fee of $17.00 (for most residential homes), this must be added to the water charge total equaling $90.30.
The sewer side of the bill breaks down as follows:
- The first five units are charged at a fee of $17.00. To determine the remainder, take the 21 units minus the first 5 units and that leaves 16 units.
- Take those 16 units and multiply them by $7.40—that would give you an amount of $98.40.
- Now add the two amounts $17.00 and $98.40 for a total sewer charge of $115.40.
- There is meter size-based Sewer Capitalization Fee of $20.00 (for most residential homes), this must be added to the sewer charge total equaling $135.40.
You now need to add the total water calculations with the total sewer side calculations for the full billing charge:
- $90.30 for water plus $135.40 for sewer equals a grand total of $225.70 for a four-month cycle.
